This nonsurgical procedure is an
injection of a gel-like medication into the
knee joint to supplement or replace the
thick synovial fluid that cushions the
joint. This treatment can help reduce the
pain of arthritis.
The physician cleans and sterilizes the
knee and injects a medication to numb
the skin.
The physician carefully guides 8 needle
into the joint space. In some cases, a
fluoroscope may be used to oonfirm the
needle's position. Once the tip is inside
the joint, the medication is injected. The
injected fluid will cushion and lubricate
the knee.
The needle is removed, and a small
bandage is applied. A series of three to
flYe injections may be required on 8
weekly basis. Pain relief may take
weeks to occur.
